Food Technology
Horticultural food technology mainly deals with the advanced post harvest technology and food technology methods that are used for the extension of shelf life of fresh horticultural foods, without compromising on their quality and food value. In recent years, various horticulture food technology methods and innovative concepts have been developed for the post harvest handling; processing; packaging and labeling of fresh horticultural products.

Post Harvest Technology
Major developments seen in the field of post harvest technology are, introduction of hi-tech post harvest infrastructure for sorting, grading and packing of fresh horticultural products and introduction of well-managed facilities such as collection centers and pack houses for the collection and processing of fresh horticultural products that are directly coming from the field.

Horticultural food technology methods that are developed for better post harvest treatments of horticultural products include curing; disinfestation treatments such as fumigation, hot water treatment, vapor heat treatment, gamma irradiation, precooling treatments like hydro-cooling, vacuum-cooling, forced air- cooling and package icing. Horticultural food technology methods currently available for Shelf Life Extension include Waxing and CIPC or MICP Treatments.

Fresh Produce Storage

Hi-tech storage facilities like cold storage, silo storage, controlled atmosphere storage, modified atmosphere storage, high humidity cold storage are also introduced in recent times for the long term storage of fresh horticultural products. Advanced transport facilities such as refrigerated containers and reefer vehicles are also now widely used for the transportation of fresh horticultural products.

Fresh Produce Processing
Horticultural food technology methods that are used for processing and value addition of fresh produce includes both primary and secondary processing technologies such as drying, powdering, peeling, cutting, slicing, mixing, canning, blanching, IQF-individual quick freezing technology and ripening technology.

Fresh Produce Packaging

Horticultural food technology methods used for advanced packaging practices are modified atmosphere packaging; use of sophisticated packaging materials and machineries; modified CFB packaging and biodegradable packaging.
