Horticultural Science




Horticulture is the largest branch of agriculture science. Horticultural science embraces several areas such as olericulture; floriculture; organic farming; ornamental horticulture; pomology; spices and condiments; plantation crops; medicinal and aromatic plants; root and tuber crops; arboriculture; landscaping; gardening technology; and aesthetic horticulture. However, most common branches of horticultural science are pomology; olericulture and floriculture.

Pomology
Pomology is the science of fruits. Pomology studies production, processing and marketing of fruits and fruit products.

Olericulture
Olericulture is the science of vegetables. Olericulture studies production, processing and marketing of vegetables.

Floriculture
Floriculture is the science of flowers. Floriculture studies production, processing and marketing of flowers and floral products.

Other major divisions of horticultural science are viticulture, ornamental horticulture; landscape horticulture; spices, root crops and tuber crops; medicinal herbs; aromatic herbs; plantation crops and post harvest technology.

Viticulture
Viticulture is the science of wine making.

Ornamental Horticulture
Ornamental horticulture is the study of ornamentals. Ornamental horticulture includes production and marketing of ornamental plants.

Landscape Horticulture
Landscape horticulture is the study of landscaping. Landscape horticulture includes landscape designing and establishment and management of landscapes.

Spices
Study of spices and condiments also comes under horticultural science. Growing practices as well as marketing practices for spices and condiments are dealt in detail under the subject of horticultural science.

Root Crops and Tuber Crops
Horticultural science deals with the study of the root crops and tuber crops which includes production and marketing of root and tuber crops

Medicinal Herbs
Horticulture also deals with the study of medicinal herbs. Growing and marketing practices for medicinal herbs are taught under the subject of horticultural science.

Aromatic Herbs
Horticulture also deals with the study of aromatic herbs. Growing and marketing practices for aromatic herbs are taught under the subject of horticultural science.

Plantation Science
Plantation science used to be considered as a major branch of horticultural science. However, in recent times, plantation science as a subject has achieved a status of an independent subject. Growing practices as well as marketing practices for plantation crops and various plantation management practices are taught in detail under the subject of plantation science.

Post Harvest Technology
Post harvest technology is a major division of horticultural science that deals with the post harvest processing, preservation and quality maintenance of horticultural products.

In addition to this, horticultural science includes practices such as apiculture, sericulture, organic horticulture, arboriculture, orchard management, propagation and nursery management, and gardening and garden designing.

Apiculture
Apiculture is the science of Bee-keeping. Apiculture deals with the production and marketing of honey and honey products.

Sericulture
Sericulture is the art and science of rearing silkworms. Sericulture deals with the production and marketing of silkworms.

Organic Horticulture
Organic horticulture is the application of organic farming principles in horticultural production.

Orchard Management
Orchard management includes designing; establishment and management of fruit orchards.

Propagation and Nursery Management
Propagation methods and nursery production is dealt under the subject of Propagation and Nursery Management.

Gardening and Garden Designing
Gardening is a major hobby for almost all nature-loving people. Gardening not only offers great recreational value but also offers tremendous therapeutic benefits.

Arboriculture
